HIS bond with horses was forged at quite a young age and his love for them has only grown stronger as the years have gone on.

So it is no surprise 19-year-old Matt Moffat took home the Charlie Maher Memorial Young Guns Campdraft win last week down in Tamworth.

Matt first started competing as a 14-year-old juvenile rider.

Not knowing a lot about the sport of campdrafting, he challenged himself to learn on the go, learning new skills every time he got on the back of a horse.

A few years into the sport and the Kabra local decided to take on his first challenge, chasing the Australian campdrafting association juvenile title at the age of 16.

“Fortunately I got the experience to win the title as well as win the juvenile draft at the finals,” Matt said.

With the juvenile title under his belt, Matt pushed himself to work harder, with his efforts paying off this year.

“The draft was challenged with some of the country’s finest horses and young riders.

“To take the win of a draft like this, it requires two large scores and two good cows to reach the top,” he said.

“To win any draft that is in memory of someone that has passed is always a great achievement to me. Also it’s a great battle between fellow young competitors as the country’s finest come together to compete.

“To come away with the win means a lot because you know you have had to bring your A-game and to win means you performed.”

Matt said the draft was always an event he had wanted to compete in and had put hours of practice into his skills.

“Most afternoons consist of practising and working on the horses to make them better, so training for an event like this is an everyday scenario in my everyday life,” he said.

“My favourite part about the sport is that it’s a family orientated event.

“Everyone gets involved and enjoys a weekend away doing what they love. It’s also a good weekend for a social event for everyone to catch up.

“It’s great to see good horses and good riders compete at such a high level.”
